Follicular
Hair Transplant
Hair grows in clusters of one, two, three and occasionally four.
This grouping of hair growth is known as Follicular Units. These
units are very small and can only be detected undermagnification.
This natural, unpatterned, cluster hair growth is the normal manner
in which hair grows. Dr. Weikel uses Follicular Unit grafting
replicating the natural growth of your hair. These follicular
units are relocated from the donor site (where naturally grown
follicular units reside) and replaced within the recipient site
(balding or thinning area).
General
Technique
Each follicular unit must be transferred in one piece to receive
ultimate regrowth in its new destination. Dr. Weikel will harvest
a single section of hair from the donar site. This strip will
then be separated by the follicular units and trimmed under a
microscope to create micro-grafts which are then placed in close
proximity to one another in a pattern mimicking the natural hair
growth. It is through many small insertion sites that Dr. Weikel
and his highly trained surgical team is able to transplant up
to 2000 grafts in one session.
Postoperatively
A bandage or dressing may be required for the first 24-48 hours.
Within these two days you should refrain from heavy activity and
simply rest. Exercise should be avoided for one week. Once the
bandage is removed, you may continue shampooing. You may also
return to work at this time. Your transplants will be virtually
undetectable by your friends and family, leaving a natural hairline
with virtually no scarring in the grafted areas. After a few weeks,
the transplanted hair will fall out and the hair follicles or
roots will remain dormant. New hair growth will begin to appear
within three to six months.
