LIPOSUCTION
Liposuction
Liposuction helps sculpt the body by eliminating unwanted fat
from specific areas including the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs,
knees, arms, chin, cheeks, and neck. Dr. Weikel uses the tumescent
technique which he finds provides more precise results with
a faster recovery period. It is important to understand that
liposuction is NOT an alternative to dieting, it is used only
to address those stubborn areas that do not respond to traditional
weight-loss and exercise. The best candidate for liposuction,
as with any cosmetic procedure has realistic expectations of
how the procedure can benefit you. Liposuction is ideal for
those who are of normal body weight with firm, elastic skin
who have unwanted pockets of fat in specific areas. Age is not
a major consideration, although older patients tend to have
less taut skin, with less elasticity and may not receive results
as desirable as a younger patient with firmer skin.

General
Technique
With this procedure the identified areas of fat deposits will
be removed to reshape one or more areas of the body. Through small
incisions, a cannula (small narrow tube) is inserted and will
suction the layers that are beneath the skin. The cannula is used
to break up the fat cells and suction them out. As the fat is
removed, fluid is also eradicated; therefore it is crucial that
this fluid be continuously replaced through intravenous fluids.
You will be carefully monitored both during and immediately after
the procedure.
Postoperatively
Postoperatively you will experience some fluid drainage from the
incisions. You will be required to wear a snug, elastic garment
to control swelling and help your skin adjust to its new contours.
This should be worn for a few weeks. You will be encouraged to
start walking around as soon as possible to further reduce swelling
and help prevent the blood from clotting (usually after the first
24 hours). Although you may not feel 100% most patients return
to work after a few days. You can anticipate feeling significantly
better after a week to ten days. Stitches will be removed within
1-2 weeks. Strenuous activity should be avoided for about a month
as your body continues to heal. Most swelling and bruising will
dissipate within three weeks.
