Gynecomastia
(Male Breast Reduction)
Gynecomastia, or male breast reduction, affects an estimated 40
to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. For
those who feel self-conscious about their appearance, Breast Reduction
can help. It is with this procedure that fat and glandular tissues
are removed. In severe cases, excess skin is also removed resulting
in a firmer, flatter, contoured breast. Gynecomastia is typically
performed on healthy, emotionally stable men of any age. The best
candidates for surgery have firm skin with good elasticity that
will reshape to the body's new contours. Dr. Weikel discourages
this procedure for obese or overweight men who have not first
attempted to correct the problem with exercise or weight loss.
General
Technique
Dr. Weikel will make an incision in a relatively hidden location,
such as on the edge of the areola or in the under arm. Through
this incision Dr. Weikel will remove glandular tissue, fat and
excess skin from around the areola (nipple) and around the breast.
If the breast consists mainly of excess fatty tissue, Dr. Weikel
will use a small hollow tube called a cannula to eliminate the
fat with a procedure known as liposuction.
Using strong, deliberate strokes, the cannula is moved through
the layers beneath the skin to break up the fat and suction it
out.
Postoperative
Whether the procedure is done by direct excision and/or liposuction
you should expect some discomfort for a few days after surgery.
This discomfort can be controlled with medications prescribed
by Dr. Weikel. Swelling and bruising are normal for the first
few weeks. To help reduce swelling, an elastic pressure garment
is worn. Stitches will be removed about one to two weeks following
the procedure. You may return to work as early as a few days after
surgery, depending on how you feel. You will be strongly advised
to refrain from sexual activity, excessive or heavy exercise for
about three to four weeks. It is important to understand that
final results will not be apparent until the swelling has completely
dissipated, which may take a few months.
