MICRO
FAT GRAFTING
Fat Injections
Fat Injections are used to fill depressions or lines in the skin.
Fat is most typically used to fill in sunken cheeks or laugh lines
between the mouth and nose. This procedure may also be used to
correct skin indentations or depressions often formed from acne
scarring, and is also performed to enhance the lips. Fat is similar
to bovine collagen in that it corrects
the same areas of the face: acne scars, lines, wrinkles, nasolabial
folds, lip enhancement and cheek folds. However, Collagen
is not surgical and is not permanent; fat is more permanent (depending
on your body and the surgeon's technique) and is a minor surgical
procedure requiring local anesthetic.
General Technique
The fat is taken directly from your body and re-injected in specific
areas of the face. Since the fat used to enhance specific areas
is from other areas of your body, (such as the abdomen, buttocks
or thighs) there is little possibility of adverse reaction. The
fat is withdrawn using a syringe with a large-bore needle or a
cannula (the same instrument used in liposuction) attached to
a suction device. The fat is prepared and injected into the recipient
site with a needle.
Postoperative
Although swelling and bruising will be present, discomfort is
minimal and you should be ready to resume normal activity within
a few days. The swelling and puffiness in the area may last several
weeks, especially if a large area was filled. It is important
to keep in mind that your body will absorb some of the re-injected
fat and repeated injections of stored fat may be needed for optimal
results.
