Chin Augmentation
(mentoplasty)
A weak or receding chin can be addressed with a chin augmentation,
in which a small object is placed on top of the existing chin bone,
creating a more balanced facial harmony. Many times, a rhinoplasty,
nasal contouring, is performed in conjunction with chin augmentation,
as a weak chin can make a normal nose appear large and an already
prominent nose seem even larger. These procedures combined can bring
an optimal balance throughout the facial structure.
General Technique
For a chin augmentation, the incision is made either under the chin
externally or inside the mouth. An individually sized implant is
placed above the chin bone, beneath the muscles. Sutures are used
to close the incision.
Postoperatively
Pain associated with this procedure is quite minimal and is controlled
with pain medications. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent
infection. The bandages are usually removed within 3-5 days. Strenuous
activities must be avoided for at least 3-4 weeks. Some temporary
swelling and bruising of the face are to be expected. Keeping the
head slightly elevated when reclining and applying cold compresses
should assist in reducing swelling. Any scarring from the incisions
will fade significantly within a few weeks; however, they are quite
inconspicuous because of the location of the incision.
